Would You Be Willing To Get Infected With The Coronavirus For $4,500?

Here at The Money Manual we regularly write about ways to earn extra cash, and we aren’t embarassed or above doing just about anything. Well, except for maybe this. The Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in London announced that it is looking for 24 people to inject with the coronavirus and to participate in their flu camp. It’s an attempt by the medical research and development company Hvivo to create a vaccine for the rapidly spreading disease — so a noble cause to be sure, but still a scary undertaking for participants. And how much will participants get paid? $4,588. Not anyone can sign up and get selected. Those who are willing will receive a barrage of tests before being accepted into the study. If selected, someone will be given two of the virus’ weaker strains 0C43 and 229E (which cause mild respiratory symptoms) and then they will be given vaccines. Doctors will then monitor them and their response to the vaccines to try and hone in on a treatment that works. Being sick isn’t the entire job, participants will have to be quarantined for two weeks, eat a restricted diet and avoid exercise. Again, would you be willing to do this for essentially $4,500 (and the selflessness of helping to find a vaccine)? It’s definitely a tough order.
