If you don’t already know, Tesla, which trades under TSLA, is an American electric car and clean energy company founded in 2003 by a group of engineers. Its current CEO (and product architect) is billionaire industrial designer and engineer Elon Musk, who is also the founder and co-founder of a few other tech and engineering companies, including SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, PayPal and OpenAi. Yeah, we know, he’s a heavy hitter.

Musk happened to be an early investor in Tesla himself back in 2004 and became the company’s CEO in 2008. During Musk’s years at the helm of Tesla, the company has seen a rapid rise. And in recent years, the company and its stock are creating a huge amount of buzz.

Why Is Everyone Talking About Tesla And Tesla Stock?

Tesla sells electric cars, batteries, solar roof panels, solar roof tiles and clean energy storage. Its market value as of January, 2022 is over $1 trillion. At the end of 2020, the company was valued at more than $600 billion. The company has been growing rapidly.

Its success and reputation as a leader in its industry have led the company to be a popular stock selection among investors everywhere, too.

In January 2020, the company reported its first profitable quarter from 2019. Another watershed moment for Tesla? After being added to the S&P 500 Index just a year ago, it is now the fifth-largest company on the index.

Why is that such a big deal? The S&P 500 is a stock market index (operated by S&P Dow Jones Indexes) that tracks the stocks of 500 large-cap U.S. companies — large-cap meaning that the companies in this index are worth more than $10 billion. To be considered for the index, a company needs to have had five consecutive profitable quarters.
