The IRS Has $1.4 Billion In Unclaimed Tax Refunds: Here’s How To Find Out If You Are Owed Money
Normally when you think of the IRS you think of a big bad boogie man who is out to take your money, but did you know that the IRS has around $1.4 billion in unclaimed tax refunds? That’s right, the IRS might actually owe you money for a change. Ca-ching.
If you didn’t file in 2015, you might be owed a check apparently. According to the IRS, students and part-time workers in particular might have overlooked filing, and therefor have an unclaimed refund.
If you haven’t filed your 2015 return and think you are owed money, you must file your return by a certain date in April (each state is slightly different, so make sure to check on that). Keep in mind that you are only eligible to collect a return within a three year window or you forfeit it.
Some other caveats to keep in mind: you are not going to be eligible for your 2015 refund if you haven’t file for 2016 and 2017. Also, any refund you might owe will be applied to any unpaid child support or federal debts, like student loans.
Caveats aside, if you haven’t filed for 2015, we highly suggest you get on it. Like now.
