Everybody knows that the holiday season is one of the most difficult and most expensive times of the year to travel. And deciding when to buy an airline ticket for Thanksgiving or Christmas travel is essentially and art form in need of perfecting.
Traveling this Thanksgiving? If you haven’t gotten your airline tickets yet, don’t wait! Book this week before prices go up. Even the experts agree.
When to book Thanksgiving flights
According to Skyscanner.com, the best week to book was the last week of August, which would have allowed people to save 7%. But the second best week, and perhaps the last chance to find the best deals, is this week– the week of October 1. You can expect to save up to 6%.
The app Hipmunk also reports that the average ticket price this week is $387 and will likely jump to $500 plus the week before Thanksgiving.
Additional Thanksgiving travel tips
Another tip to saving the most on your flight is to fly to your destination on Thanksgiving Day. The most expensive, and one of the busiest travel days of the year is Thanksgiving Eve, so avoid flights that day if possible. Depending on how close your destination is, you won’t miss much by heading out on Thanksgiving morning.
